The history of Books for Laos starts with Colin Cotterill's story of the little girl he met in Laos who wanted a book (click on the story if you want to see a larger version):

Colin didn't have much luck getting people to donate picture books in lots of 50 - it costs quite a lot of money to donate 50 books and ship them to Thailand!

So we decided it would be a lot easier to get people to donate one book - but they have to all be the same book, because of the time it takes to translate them into Lao. We're starting with Where is the Green Sheep? by Mem Fox.

You can click on any of the links on the right to send a single copy - or if you like, several copies, of Where is the Green Sheep? to Colin in Thailand.

Unlike some projects, where you're asked for a donation, but don't really know whether the money's going to end up with the people you're trying to help, or whether it will all be used on staff costs, paper for the photocopier and biscuits for the tea room, with Books for Laos, you donate a book - and you know a little boy or girl in Laos is going to end up with a treasured story book - probably their only story book.

So go on, click on one of the links to the right to give a child in Laos the chance to experience the magic of story books - you'll feel good about it.
